Panic: What is it and why do I do it?
Your heart is racing, you feel a funny tingling sensation in your fingers, you're sweaty, anxious and disoriented and feel a little detached from reality. You'll feel better once you get out of here and go get a drink of water and sit down somewhere.
If you recognize feeling this way, you might have had a panic attack. These and other symptoms of anxiety ranging from chest pains to a fear of going crazy take many people to an emergency room or at least their family physician's office...But often times these same individiuals leave more perplexed than when they arrived at the medical center...because they have been told there is nothing physically wrong. It is just anxiety or stress.
Often times when a person is diagnosed with panic disorder (you want to rule out any other illness such as a thyroid problem, heart problem, or hypoglycemia) they have come through a prolonged period of stress. They may have just survived a trauma (post traumatic stress or PTSD) or had surgery or endured a major change. This environment coupled with a genetic predisposition toward anxiety, depression or other mental illness sets up the scene for a panic disorder diagnosis.
During a panic attack, the body's fight or flight response is initiated when there is no real threat or danger. All the stress hormones and adrenaline that you would need to fight an armed intruder or run for your life are released at a time when there is no emergency. So your body is left with all of this extra "fuel" but no battle to consume it. Thus you are left feeling pretty rotten, anxious and frazzled.
Why some people panic and others don't is still up for much debate. Some researchers are looking for ways to determine if you are likely to develop an anxiety or panic disorder based on one's physical or chemical make-up. But for right now, heredity plays a big part. So if you've seen your relatives go through it, you might want to be on guard and keep your environment as stress-free and prioritized as possible.
Fear of having another attack is usually what sets up the next episode. This "anticipatory anxiety" and mulling over the worrysome thoughts is so powerful! If you can tell yourself that you aren't in any physical danger and that you will not suffer bodily harm, this can keep the fear at bay. In fact, I often suggest to people who e-mail me to "give yourself permission" to experience the symptoms. This takes the power away from the fear and in this way you are disarming the fear.
Some people get migraine headaches, some people get upset stomaches, others have muscle tension. You just might happen to panic under stress. But you are in good company -- because most people with panic disorder are high achievers and very intelligent people. We just have to learn to control those over-active brains of ours, get our thought-life in order and we'll be okay! I'd much rather have this type of illness that no one else can really notice...and the fact that it is not terminal or catastrophic in nature makes it less threatening too!
It will take some time, but you can overcome it and bring every thought into the submission of Christ and learn to be at peace...the kind of peace that only Jesus can bring! Remember, Jesus fought through the biggest panic attack of all time in the Garden of Gethsemane. Fear was relentless in its attack against Him. But He did what we need to do...He pressed through and felt the fear and did it anyway!!!

Angela's latest audio CD titled "Fear: The Fortress Without Walls" is now available. She delivered this teaching for the first time at the Fear to Freedom Workshop on Nov. 17 at Cathedral of Life. This teaching is one that reveals the first battle against fear in the Garden of Eden - - and how Adam and Eve lost that battle. But Jesus, thousands of years later in another Garden, won the battle against fear. We get into trouble when we don't know What God Said, and when we don't know Who We Are. This new CD is available for just $10 from our On-Line Store.
